Squatters by the thousands were pouring across the mountains and driving settlers from their cabins. Others did not wait for such legal niceties as deeds and clear titles. Crawford reported to Washington:

The man that is strong and able to make others afraid of him seems to have the best chance... I do not find I can get you the quantity of land [unless] I could stay all summer and be on the spot as people crowd out in such numbers the like was never seen.

Crawford wrote Washington that armed squatters had taken Washington's land on Miller's Run. Washington probably believed that the arrival of the former colonel of the Virginia Regiment on the scene would sway the claim-jumping settlers, but Crawford warned:

They took your land and say they will keep it. I could drive them away but they will come back immediately as soon as my back is turned. The man I put on [your] land they drove away or built a house so close to his door he cannot get into the house. There is no getting them off without force of arms.
